Publication Assessment

My target audience is the community of Camp Bethel in Haddam, CT. This community is made up of at least five generations (young and old) of Christians who are all family and friends to each other. They come from all walks of life but have this religion and faith in common. Camp Bethel is a place where during the summer months they can go and celebrate their faith through church services, bible studies and other activities.

I would like to do this paper in a descriptive, braided personal narrative. I want to incorporate at least three different braids: 1) my growth there as a teenager 2) entries from the daily logs of my parents (and maybe my mother’s diary if she will let me); they were the caretakers and 3) a religious aspect somehow. I may do the first and second braid in ways of stories or a timeline. I’m really not sure yet.

The piece titled “What Camp Bethel has Meant to Me” by Al Everette will be my next blog post. This is a good example if what I would like to do, only on a grander scale.

My piece will definitely be very unique to the publication because it is so long, descriptive and braided. Like I sent you in the other email the mission statement of the publication is “a publication of the Camp Bethel Association intended to promote our mission of sharing with our members and interested individuals the eternal goodness and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. Articles, photos, news and notes consistent with the above are welcomed and encouraged."

Query Letter

Bethel Bulletin; Query; Camp Bethel

Dear Sue,

I would like to ask you to feature my personal narrative about self discovery in the Bethel Bulletin for the camp members. I would like to think this piece would act as a blanket apology for my Camp Bethel family because of my unprofessional decision this past summer.

This piece has a very strong descriptive component detailing my teenage years at a Camp Bethel. It will be in a braided essay format and have a gee whiz style to it where I aim to make the camp seem fresh and even more beautiful to its members. However the realization of self discovery happens much later when I don’t live there anymore, but miss the community with a passion. Everything from the people, the land, the events, the buildings, and the job my parents and I lived there for will be included. I plan on forgetting nothing.

As for my qualifications, I had several poems published in the high school’s attempt for a magazine, and beyond that is unseen. You can contact me at pnichols08@unity.edu or by phone at 207-465-5231.

Sincerely,

Phoebe Nichols

Introduction

Hi,
On this blog I will be posting progress "reports" on a final project for my seminar class Writing for Publication.
For this project I need to find a publication and write a query letter to the editor. I then need to complete the 2,000 word piece by December 13, 2010.
Here we go!
